温暖前線は、暖かい空気が冷たい空気の上をゆっくりと這い上がりながら進むことでできる前線だ。暖かい空気は冷たい空気より軽いため、滑り込むように上昇していく。この上昇気流によって、前線の広い範囲で層状の雲ができ、長時間にわたって比較的穏やかな雨を降らせることが多い。前線が通過した後は、気温が上がり、南寄りの風に変わるのが特徴だ。
A warm front is a front that forms when a mass of warm air slowly slides up and over a mass of cold air. Because warm air is less dense than cold air, it ascends as it moves forward. This updraft often leads to the formation of stratiform clouds over a wide area along the front, bringing prolonged, relatively gentle rain. A characteristic sign after the front has passed is a rise in temperature and a shift in the wind direction to southerly.
