閉塞前線は、寒冷前線が温暖前線に追いつき、二つの前線が重なってできる前線だ。寒冷前線の方が温暖前線より動きが速いため、やがて追い越してしまうことで発生する。この前線では、暖かい空気が地上から切り離されて持ち上げられるため、天候は複雑になり、大雨を伴うことが多い。閉塞前線は、発達した低気圧の寿命の最終段階に見られる。
